Partnership Projects 2009 - 2010:

Take Control! - 'Who do you want to teach your child about sex?'

Family Planning and SASS Partnership Project

Funded through the Tasmanian Health & Wellbeing Grants Program 2009

Take Control Project is a skill development program for parents, carers, teachers and students in Tasmania. The project strategies and resources are designed to increase sexual health knowledge, negotiation and communication skills, with the aim of developing the capacity for young people to have healthy relationships.

SASS and FPT have been aware for some time of the increased incidence of unsafe and non-consensual sexual activity of young people in Tasmania.  Through a successful Grant, we  are now able to conduct extensive seminars and workshops designed FREE to assist parents, carers and teachers with issues surrounding sexuality in young people.

The Sexual Assault Support Service has identified an increase of young people participating in self harming behaviours. After consulting with a number of young people in the Glenorchy municipality it was agreed that there is a need to start talking about and raising awareness of this issue in our community.

In consultation with the Glenorchy Youth Task Force and other young people, a brochure and a slap band with 'Choose Life NOT Pain' has been developed.

'Playing Cards' Exposure to Health Message Project

The common stories about women in prison are influenced by the media and popular culture. They are rarely the women’s stories. This pack of playing cards is the result of women in Risdon Prison, Tasmania, working together in developing ideas, the designs, messages and colour schemes. Creativity, a sense of fun and enthusiasm have been essential in the development of this pack of cards. It also tells of an alternative story of the women involved, We thank all the community services involved for their support with special thanks to Chrissie Hall-Pascoe and Amanda Walker. Project Worker Anne Stephens.

This Project was funded through the Tasmanian Community Fund 2004 and under the auspices of the Sexual Assault Support Service Inc (SASS). These Playing Cards are not available for sale as this project has been completed, but they can be viewed on our site, click on the button below to view a small sample of these cards.
