Response to Abuse
in Care Review
On Sunday, 29th June 2008, the Deputy
Premier & Minister for Health and Human Services, Lara Giddings MP,
released a Media Statement regarding the process for assessing
claims of abuse whilst in state care. As a result of the strong
response and to allow people more time to prepare their
applications, the Government had extended the time for applications
by one month, with the new closing date to be 31 July 2008.
We had 2 articles
published in The Mercury in December last year.
On
Monday 31st December 2007
there was an article titled 'FESTIVE RAPE DANGER'.
Sexual Assault Support
Services head Karen Jones said that New Year's Eve was fast
approaching and it's a danger period as offenders took advantage of
binge drinkers. Rape
victims in Tasmania have been urged by sexual assault counsellors to
get forensic testing done immediately. The article discusses issues
such as drink spiking, warning signs, and some basic strategies.

On
Saturday 22nd December 2007
we sent a letter to the editor titled 'ABUSE EVERYWHERE'.
The letter written by
Di Calderbank mentions that the Sexual Assault Support Services
joins the nation in condemning the abhorrent recent comments made by
the judge and prosecutor in the case of the 10 year old aboriginal
girl who was raped by nine males. The letter details other
sexual assault issues here in Tasmania as well as some disturbing
statistics.
