HOBART'S Sexual Assault Support Service has been bolstered by the opening of a new office. The service began 20 years ago as a one-room operation with two staff and grew steadily, but recently experienced funding woes. Now, with a $450,000 funding boost from the State Government, the service has relocated from North Hobart into the innercity and employed six extra staff to provide assistance to about 1000 Tasmanians each year. Supporters packed the new Campbell St building yesterday to celebrate the service's 20th birthday with cake and a spirited rendition of Happy Birthday. SASS CEO Karen Jones said the new building was closer to Tasmania Police headquarters and the Royal Hobart Hospital, which helped build partnerships with police and medical staff. Complete with eight counselling rooms and a training area, it would also provide a less traumatic environment for sexual assault victims and their families.
